Welcome
to the Corrections Standards Authority (CSA) on-line
tour of new generation juvenile detention facilities.
This tour provides an opportunity for Chief Probation
Officers and others who are, or who hope to be, involved
in the facility planning and development process to
"visit" new generation facilities around the
state and nation. Facilities on the tour do
not represent "models" or design recommendations
by the State of California or the CSA. They
are presented to provide interested parties with information
on design decisions made by other jurisdictions.
Some documents contained in the CSA
Facility Tour require Apple QuickTime for viewing. Apple
QuickTime Player is available, free of charge through
the link provided below. Once the reader is downloaded
and installed on your computer, you will be able to
view movie files from this web site.

NEW GENERATION DESIGN
Learning about new generation
facilities is important for two reasons. First,
state and federal funds are enabling counties to address
the critical need for juvenile bed space and/or
to improve existing facilities, most of which were constructed
30 to 50 years ago. Second, to enhance safety and security
in local detention facilities, the CSA is requiring
a new generation design style for all facilities constructed
with grant funds and for expansion of an existing facility
if the CSA-rated bed space to be added is 30 or more
(More).
RESOURCES
In addition to developing this
on-line tour, the CSA has updated two publications which
should be of interest and use to Chief Probation Officers
and their facility planning teams:
Corrections
Planning Handbooks,
a series of guides to effective facility planning and
development, and
More
For Le$$ a construction
cost management handbook. Another valuable resource
for the construction of New Generation Detention facilities
includes the Energy
Commission Partnership Program.
